Should We Have Done Better?

How social media and influencers can promote and fuel violence against women and girls.

Summary

On June 3, 2025, Beira’s Place, a Scotland-based support service for female victims of sexual violence, hosted a conference in Edinburgh focused on the links between social media, pornography, and men’s violence against women and girls. The event explored how social media platforms and influencers can amplify harmful content and attitudes that contribute to gender-based violence. A key speaker, Pam Gosal MSP, discussed her Prevention of Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Bill, highlighting legislative efforts to address such issues. The conference emphasised the role of online spaces in perpetuating misogyny and violence, drawing attention to the need for greater accountability and safer digital environments for women and girls.
